We are a condensed matter physics laboratory dedicated to exploring the quantum mechanical nature of materials. We seek both to reveal the fundamental science associated with changes between states and to harness the associated collective effects -- whether magnetic, electronic, or optical -- for applications. Although most of our work occurs at temperatures near absolute zero where quantum mechanical effects dominate, we seek to follow the physics where it leads, combining studies of model systems with materials of technological import. Our laboratory is located in the Division of Physics, Math, and Astronomy of the California Institute of Technology.
